Dear Brian and Special Greetings to Your Students,
I am impressed with the initiative, dedication, and effort you are making to
get a new school or an improved one. I commend your creative problem-posing,
problem-solving, and productivity. Your work together shows that in pursuing a
practical project to improve a situation that you care about you can learn a
great deal. In fact all of the regular school subjects are combined in the good
work that you are doing. I encourage you to continue this process. You are a
positive example to others who might strive for similar contributions.
When my wife, Ann Lopez Schubert (a former Chicago Public School teacher in the
Humbolt Park area) read the article in the Tribune, she had this to say about
your project:
"This is a nice piece on an exemplary project of emancipation. I think
that there may be other allies to be found through local community action
groups. Ralph Nader's campaign page asks for specifics on local issues on
interest and wants to engage and support people to solve problems and address
concerns in their local communities. This seems like a good point of
connection. It may also be something that the filmmaker Michael Moore
would find worthwhile to take a look at. I think there are all sorts of possibilities
for extending this work. Most will come from the inspiration, intelligence,
interest, and imagination of the young people now awakened."
A lot of visibility could bring greater opportunity for your project. Keep up
the great work
Bill Schubert
