Dear 5th
Graders,
I recently
read an article about your fight for a new school building, and all I can say
is, “WOW!” I am really impressed by your dedication. For three
years, I was a middle school English teacher in New York City, and my school
building was an equally inappropriate place for learning. There were no toilet
paper dispensers and no running water in many bathrooms, the lighting was
terrible, and there was no emergency phone or intercom system in the
classrooms. There is one major difference, though. You guys are fighting to
change your situation.
I know it
sometimes seems like your opponents are too strong and powerful, but just
remember that most things worth having are worth the fight. You deserve a
better building. You deserve a clean and safe learning environment. Even if you
do not win this fight, you have learned to demand what you deserve. It’s
a very valuable lesson. Continue to stand up for yourselves, and fight to make
your voices heard.
I wish all
of you the best of luck.
Sincerely,
Andrea
