Background - The Neighborhood

Our school, Richard E. Byrd Community Academy, is located on Hill Street in the community called Cabrini Green. The neighborhood is made up of apartment buildings that are run by the Chicago Housing Authority. We call our neighborhood the Projects.

Right now they are gentrifying the area. Gentrifying means tearing down the old buildings and putting up new ones. Many of us are angry and have had to move because our buildings are being torn down. Just look at the neighborhood. It is so messed up. Actually many of us recently got notice from the housing that said we had to move out.

Even though our neighborhood has problems, we are proud of our neighborhood. This is why we are fighting for a better school. We think everyone should have a good home and a good school.

The picture above is one of the "reds." In Cabrini Green there are three different kinds of buildings: the reds, the whites, and the row houses.
